ATTENDANCE IS KEY FOR A GOOD EDUCATION
Nelson Mandela once said that “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. The staff at Bishop Murphy agree whole heartedly with Mandela and are adamant that children come to school every day. To this end and to encourage the highest attendance possible, attendance drives are organised bi-annually. The latest drive is well and truly underway. All pupils are trying their best to be in with a chance of a prize. Many free tickets were given out last week for those who had full attendance. We have two more weeks left to give free tickets. To those who will have full attendance for the three weeks, three free tickets will be given out. One ticket from each class will be drawn at the end of June and the recipients will receive a prize and a certificate. Best of luck to all involved.

All roads led to Kilworth this evening (Tuesday) for the North Cork A2 hurling final against our near neighbours CBS Mitchelstown. Our boys had defeated Kilavullen and Tomáis Dáibhís to qualify in this highly competitive division. As is so often the case in our beautiful but unpredictable (weather-wise) country of ours a strong wind played a huge part in keeping the score very low! Despite this mitigating factor, some tremendous skill, work-rate and sheer determination was evident on both sides resulting in the minimal score separating the two teams at full time. BMMS 1-03  CBS 1-02 .

Míle buíochas to referee John Ahern, Paddy Ryan for presenting both captains with their trophies and of course team coach Ms. Ryan for her hard work and diligence with this fine group of lads during their time in BMMS. You have done your families, club and school proud boys. Go n-éirí an t-ádh libh go léir.

The BMMS Senior Soccer Team created school history yesterday in Carrig Park by winning back to back Euro Eddie Soccer Cups for the first time.

Over thirty teams and 200 pupils from schools both far and wide flocked to the venue for this highly competitive event. Three teams (2 senior and 1 junior), 36 pupils, 4 teachers, 2 snas and many parents basked in the glorious sunshine in what turned out to be a tumultuous day for the school. Each team did our school proud, but it was our Senior team that stole the show in the end. The day began with a 6-0 victory versus Ballynoe Ns. The semi-final saw our boys pitted against Glanworth Ns. The team turned on the style to win 9-0 in the end. The quality of the football being played was quite something to behold. Skill and style combined with heart, determination and teamwork. The team was cheered on by our B team and our Junior side as the excitement and anticipation of a final loomed large.

The final was a local derby versus Gaelscoil de hIde. The boys dominated the game from start to finish and strode to victory on a score of 4-0. What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that the team have now won back to  back titles without the concession of a solitary goal. The team were presented with the Euro Eddie trophy and their medals. Captain James O’Brien held the trophy aloft and made a short speech. He thanked Mr O’Donoghue and Mr O’Sullivan for bringing the team to the tournament. Mr O’Donoghue told the the team of his pride in them and how they will be remembered as the best ever BMMS soccer team. The opportunity is there now for the younger boys to step up next year and go for a three in a row!

We celebrated Grandparents Day on 30th May. The children welcomed their grandparents into their classrooms to get a glance of what school is like for them in 2018. Some grandparents volunteered to entertain the children with stories of their school days. It was a day of celebration and joy for young and old alike. Teas and coffees were served  in the staff room throughout the morning. The day provided an opportunity for the young and old to interact and to learn from each other. We look forward to Grandparents Day 2019 already! Enjoy the photographs below.

We had our annual Sponsored Walk last Thursday and what a great day it was in every sense. Our route takes us from the school, down Duntaheen Road, up the Glenabo Woods path and back to the school. The weather was absolutely fabulous as the sun split the stones. Upon returning to the school the boys were treated to an ice cream on the yard/ or ‘Slush Puppy’ depending on their preference from our ice cream van on the yard. The spirits were high and we were delighted with the funds that were raised. They will go towards the equipping of our multi sensory room this summer. Enjoy the photographs below!

Last week we discussed the importance of looking after our teeth. We gathered various soft drinks and measured the amount of sugar in each drink. The boys compared the various drinks and we highlighted the drinks that contain the most sugar.

What a great day we had today for our annual School Sports Day. In every aspect, it was a day to behold. Firstly, we were blessed with the  weather. It made for perfect conditions for a day of fun and fitness. The boys  congregated on the yard in the morning and  were put into their various teams for the day. From there, we headed, en masse, to St Colman’s pitch for the main event. Thank you to St. Colman’s for facilitating us today. The pupils were rotated around five different stations – Rounders, Olympic Handball, Three legged Races, Soccer and Fun Races. The spirit among the pupils and staff alike was very positive. The boys were very supportive of one another and there was a great sense of togetherness and camaraderie. We returned to the school thereafter for more fun and athletics with our Fitness Ireland Session. It goes without saying that the boys participated to the maximum today and should sleep very well today after a day of skill , friendship and great entertainment. Many thanks to the parents that turned up to support and the staff for their trojan-like efforts to make the day a huge success.Find below a sample of photographs that paint a picture of our day.
