We have recently been learning all about The Great Famine (An Gorta Mór) in Ireland. We began by looking at the background to and causes of the Famine during our history lessons. We did various drama activities on the theme of the famine also which was great fun. We did an improvisation, a freeze frame and a number of mimes relating to various aspects of life in Ireland between 1845 and 1849. In pairs, we designed a plan for our own famine villages. Using the design as a guideline, we constructed famine villages from recycled materials e.g. cardboard boxes, milk cartons, toilet roll holders etc. We looked at many of the areas worst affected by the famine on a map during a geography lesson. We focused on the theme of “bia” for Gaeilge & had numerous “comhrás” on this topic. Finally, we learned about the consequences and effects of the famine and how these effects can still be seen today. Included are a selection of pictures, depicting our learning journey through Ireland during the famine.
