The pupils in 4th/5th class recently got to grips with the protractor as they learned about lines and angles. The concept of a semi-circular measuring tool was difficult to grasp at first. However, the pupils quickly learned how to position a protractor correctly and the correct scale to use based on the type of angle (acute versus obtuse). The students were busy measuring different angles using a virtual protractor whereby they had to rotate the protractor to be aligned with the ‘base-line’ and from there read and interpret the scale. The software then indicated whether or not the angle reading was correct.  One pupil was curious about the accuracy of the virtual protractor so he placed a real one over the iPad and was pleasantly surprised to find a match in scale readings.
